PDX: Monday Night Critique
September 13 @ 11:30 pm – September 14 @ 2:30 am America/Portland, OR
on Jitsi 4:00pm to 7:30pm Pacific https://meet.jit.si/MondayNightCritique
Who’s the group for? Writers with current active projects, or a backlog of writing projects, seeking opinions from writing peers about flow, hook, issues with, or questions about style, pov, structure…
What should you bring? Bring work that you feel is ready for ‘beta reading,’ work you’ve been looking at too long and need new eyes on, stories or excerpts at a level of completion that can’t proceed without some feedback. Individuals will have 15 to 20 minutes (max, depending on group size) to read and receive feedback – Ideally 5 to 10 min to read, and 5 to 10 minutes to receive critiques from the group.
Do I have to bring something to read? No, not yet…but be prepared to share your opinion and give feedback to the writers who share.
What kind of feedback should I expect to receive and give? 1. What kind do you want? If you’re seeking specific feedback, like “Am I using this or that literary mechanic too often?” or “I am torn about whether or not to stick with limited 3rd person…” PLEASE let the group know. 2.
Not sure what to ask for, or what to say? The 1st question we will ask/answer: would we (the reader) want to continue reading, would we be hooked and want to know more, or would we set it aside? 3. 2nd fundamental question for this group, is: Do the readers/listeners have a sense of the story, what it’s about, characters, conflict, etc, what elements stood out the most, what did readers/listeners enjoy about the piece, and where were there any trouble spots observed?
Reading slots get set from 4 to 4:30 as people arrive.
4:30 hard start, for reading and critique, in order of arrival unless otherwise arranged beforehand.
Break around 5:45-6.
Second session 6-7:30.
Some folks are early-risers and will have to exit group at break.
If you’re open to reading and offering critique after 6, let us know when you arrive. Thank you! I can’t wait to hear your work!
